Video Final Reflection

Short Film

This project was our final project this year. We were assigned to create a short film from start to finish. We began with making a longline and synopsis. Next, we turned that into a treatment. After having a meeting with the teacher to discuss our ideas and build on them, we made a few revisions. We then pitched our treatment to the class. After everyone pitched their ideas, we had an online voting process. We established directors for each of the winning pieces, and then there was choice in which piece you wanted to go into. Once we had our groups established, we began the storyboarding process. We split up to work on the mood board, costuming, storyboard, and script. Finishing that, it was time to get to filming. Filming took two separate days outside of class, and a few more in class. For this project, I was the actor. I found it very challenging to portray emotion with our piece not having dialog. I really had to work to express fear and confusion. I've never done any acting before, so it was a challenge. For my first gig, I don't think it was too bad. The editing process was the final step. It took many days and multiple hours put in after school. The editing taught me how to change the lighting to make it appear to be night, and also how to mask something. Overall, The project took about 3-4 weeks, and I'm happy with how it turned out.

Music Video
This project was to create a music video to a song of our choice. Overall, it took about 3 weeks to complete. We faced a few challenges, including finding filming dates and actors. Along the way, I learned about continuity and sequencing in editing. Feedback we were given was that the flashback filter was too dramatic. We didn't have time to change it, but we did switch a few shots for the 180 degree rule and continuity. Overall, I think it turned out really well. We entered it for eMagine, but it wasn't selected for top 5. Even though it wasn't, I'm still proud of it, and I think we did a really good job.

Time

I have used my time in class very productively. Although, having my friends in class with me can get distracting, we worked well together, and got each other back on track when we noticed we weren't focused. When I finished early, I would revise my work to see what can be done for more improvement. Once I think it's the best it can be, I will practice new skills in premier. Outside of class, I watch videos to enhance my knowledge of the software.

Strengths

I think I'm very strong in cinematography, and editing. I am good at planning ahead and being organized. In the editing process, I will keep working till I think it is as perfect as it can be. Being a perfectionist is kind of a perk in this industry.

Weaknesses

Like everyone, I have areas of improvement as well. I need to get more hands-on practice with the camera, and learn more about all the settings. I also need improvement on my acting skills so I can become more well-rounded in the video process.

Summary

This semester, my favorite part was the music video. It's the piece I'm personally most proud of, as I was one of the main helpers in pre-production. I would change that we didn't use mics during our movie trailer, so the audio is better. Overall, I learned a lot about different filming and editing techniques. A goal I would set for next year is to always feel accomplished with all of my projects.

Conclusion

This semester I enjoyed much more than last semester. I definitely prefer entertainment rather than convergence. I'm very excited for next year, and to expand my experience. I look forward to the excitement of creating bigger and better projects.
