Video Semester Reflection

ONW Procedures

This project was to explain a procedure at school. My group chose to show how to report bullying. It took about two weeks in total. We spent a lot of time story boarding and preparing, a couple days to film, and a few more days editing. This was our first project with using cameras, so it was challenging to get used to them, and figure out everything hands-on with the cameras. Alas, it was a good learning experience to get to know the cameras better. I also learned how important lighting is, and how it establishes the mood for a scene. Some feedback I was given was to fix the cut at the end where Olivia is walking, and I tried too, but I couldn't get the shots to line up right. I didn't change much from the original video, just fixing a couple cuts. I am pretty happy with this video, but the lighting and settings on the camera at the beginning don't look very good, so I will change that next time.

ONW 1 in 2000

This project was to do an interview with a classmate about something that has occurred in their life. My group interviewed Brooke Cunningham about when she passed out at homecoming pictures. It took a little more than a week to complete. Because it was our first time using mics, when we filmed Brooke's interview, it didn't have audio. We had to then use an extra day to re-film her interview, which ended up not being an issue. I also was a bit overwhelmed, and wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to sequence my video. Along the way, I learned how to film an interview. For example, that you have to use the rule of thirds, and keep the subject on the opposite side of the frame that they are looking in. I also learned how to do a lower third. After I had my video sequenced, I wanted to change it so it went more back and forth between the two people. So, I changed how the whole video was sequenced, and I think I like it better like this. I am pretty happy with how it turned out, but it could use more b-roll. I didn't know what other b-roll to incorporate into the video so I used what I had and I think it turned out okay.

Classtime

I think I used my time in class very wisely. I finished my video with time to spare before the video was due. When I would finish early I would continue re-watching my video seeing what I could change to make better. I try to finish assignments on my own time if I don't finish, but I don't have access to premier pro at home. I do finish blogs and such at home.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I think I'm strong in being the director. I like to plan things out so they will run smoothly. I excel in being able to give everyone a job, so we use our time and strengths to their maximum potential. I also think I am pretty good at editing more entertainment purpose pieces. I am not very strong in editing interviews. I also need more practice with camera settings. I will learn from people in my next groups to improve on those things.

ONW Sophomore Edition

For this video, I couldn't be present for most of the filming. I came to film when I could, and I helped with some of the editing. We made the United Sound video. I got to sit in the booth while we put it together, and I learned a lot about the process of putting it together.

Summary

This semester my favorite part was the first video, because I am not very interested in convergence journalism. I am very excited for next semester, and getting into more entertainment videos! I think towards the end of the semester I lost my motivation because I wasn't as passionate about the videos we were making. Next time, I am going to try and keep my motivation up so I stay on track even if what we are doing isn't my favorite. I learned a lot this semester about time management, communication, and overall skills for convergence. My goal for next semester is to turn in everything on time and make more friendships with new people.
