ONW 2000 in 1

Overview

In the eCommunications video production strand, our most recent project was an interview. For this project, we got to choose if we wanted to be directors. Everyone who wanted to be one volunteered, and then they got to pick who was on their team. I was in a team with Kensie Likes, Annabelle Glasscock, and Holly McCormick was our Director. We went through the process starting with deciding the topic we wanted to focus on. After brainstorming many ideas, we chose to interview Brooke about when she passed out at homecoming pictures. We wrote out about 20 questions we wanted to ask her, and then thought it would be helpful if we had a witness be interviewed too. We chose Alex Pauli, Brooke's date, to give us his point of view. So, we wrote about 15 questions similar to Brooke's, regarding the same topics. Then, we filmed and edited our interviews.

Shooting

The process of filming our interviews was actually much more difficult than expected. We had to make sure that our location was well lit, and that it didn't have too much of a distracting background. It was important that we framed the subjects correctly; using the rule of thirds, and having them look to the opposite side from which they are framed on. We did Alex's interview 1st. There were no mics available, so we just used the audio from the camera. Then we did Brooke's interview. We filmed it once without a mic and when we put the video on the computer, there was no audio. So, we had to refilm it. The second time, we used a mic. I think it sounds much more clear and crisp with the mic, although in some parts her hair caused there to be some issues. We made the interviews on opposing sides so it looked more like they were almost talking to each other. I am pretty content with how they came out overall. As for the b-roll, we didn't really know what to film because nothing really related to homecoming. In my video, I put some natural unscripted shots of Brooke in, as well as some of her simply looking "dramatic". Then, I also put pictures of Brooke and Alex together, a group picture, and a video that was taken at homecoming.

Editing

My first time editing, I had all of Brooke's interview, then all of Alex's. But when we re-edited,  I decided for it to go back and fourth between them. When I did that, I found that it didn't flow as well from beginning to end, and I didn't ant the viewers to get confused, so I rearranged them until I thought it was in the order that made the most sense chronologically. Overall, editing this video wasn't too difficult, but it took more time and effort. Compared to videos we've done in the past, I think this one was more difficult in the aspect of setting it up for the viewer and telling a story, while it was easier for me to do that with previous videos.
